Solar panels and home batteries can work together to help households use more of the electricity they generate and reduce reliance on grid electricity.

How solar and batteries work together

During daylight hours, rooftop solar panels generate electricity. Your home can use this electricity immediately, export surplus electricity to the grid or store some of it in a compatible battery.

When solar generation falls, stored battery energy may be used to power household appliances.

Understanding system size

  • Solar panel capacity is generally measured in kilowatts (kW).
  • Battery storage capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
  • Battery output power determines how many appliances can operate simultaneously.
  • Actual performance depends on weather, household consumption and system efficiency.

Savings and payback

Financial benefits depend on installation costs, electricity tariffs, feed-in credits, daily energy consumption and battery usage patterns.

A battery does not automatically guarantee savings. Compare realistic scenarios before making a purchase.

Blackout protection and safety

Not every battery provides backup power during an outage. Backup capability depends on the inverter, battery configuration and installation.

Use appropriately accredited and licensed installers and check product warranties, safety requirements and maintenance arrangements.
