Suburbs, localities and postcodes

Suburb and locality search (type a few letters or a postcode), service areas and locality names across PlaceNest use Australian Bureau of Statistics data.

Nearby places (OpenStreetMap)

The places listed under "What's nearby" (schools and childcare, shops and pharmacies, health services, bus, tram, light rail and train stops, parks and sport, libraries and community centres) come from OpenStreetMap: © OpenStreetMap contributors (https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright).

The data is available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0 — https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/. PlaceNest's list of places is a derived database of that data and is itself licensed under the ODbL 1.0. It contains only OpenStreetMap data — no PlaceNest user, listing or address information.

  • Source: the Geofabrik Australia extract of OpenStreetMap (https://download.geofabrik.de/australia-oceania/australia.html); the data date is shown under each list.
  • Selected tags: amenity = school, kindergarten, childcare, university, college, pharmacy, clinic, doctors, hospital, bus_station, library, community_centre; shop = supermarket, convenience, greengrocer, mall, department_store, chemist; healthcare = centre, clinic, doctor, hospital, pharmacy; highway = bus_stop; railway = station, halt, tram_stop; public_transport = station; leisure = park, playground, sports_centre, stadium, swimming_pool, golf_course, ice_rink, recreation_ground.
  • Each feature is reduced to its OpenStreetMap id, a category, its name (or a plain label such as "Unnamed park") and one point — the centre of its bounding box for areas and lines.
  • Excluded: private or unnamed swimming pools, and stations tagged as disused, abandoned, preserved or a museum. Features of the same kind and name within 250 m are kept once.
  • Distances are straight-line, measured from the suburb centre, never from a property address.

Download the derived database (gzip-compressed JSON, about 4 MB, licensed under the ODbL 1.0, © OpenStreetMap contributors). Each file states its OpenStreetMap data date, source and licence. The build steps are available on request from PlaceNest Support. OpenStreetMap is community-mapped and may be incomplete or out of date — check before relying on it.
